Hi Joe, Great page, very helpful. I'm trying to find information re: my family. My grand parents imigrated to the U.S. in 1911 from Corleone, Sicily.I belive they landed at Ellis Island, N.Y. My grandfathers name was Leo Luca Triolo (my father changed it to Triola). His wife's maiden name was Gennaro(Anna). My Mother's maiden name is Cuccia, from the Alcamo region. I'm also related to, Mancuso's, Vergadamo's,DeFranco's and Zucchini's, all from Sicily. As I understand it, the Triolo family where district govenors of the Alcamo region since the mid 1800's. Looking for links to Catalfamo, Sofo, Ruffo, Tripodi, Maio families from San Procopio, Reggio Di Calabria. Came here between 1890 and 1913. My great grandparents came to Canandaigua, NY with my grandfather Giuseppe Catalfamo and his siblings in 1913. He went back to San Procopio and married my grandmother, Giuseppina Sofo, who was his first cousin, in 1925. Their youngest daughter Maria Carmella was my birth mother but her brother Rocco raised me. Rocco's siblings were Domenica, Francesco, Caterina, Vincenzo, Maria and Salvatore. Rocco, Domenica, Caterina, and Salvatore are still living. Ancestor in Italy was another Francesco Catalfamo, probably born in the 1830's or 40's who fought with Garibaldi. My great grandfather, Rocco, was born in 1860, the year Garibaldi liberated Calabria and Sicily.

I am just starting my search two months after returning from a trip to Italy, I feel an overwhelming need to know more about my fathers heritage. Hi Joe, I'm having a very hard time locating any information on my ancestor from Sezze,Italy. Our name in America is spelled ARCESI, but my Grandfather says they changed the spelling. The spellings I have are ARCESSE, ARCESE, ARCESIE. My great grandfather was Antonio and was married to Mary? They had one child while still in Sezze (ignacious). Antonio departed for America on Feb 16, 1905 and Mary and Ignacious came over around 1915. Antonio's mothers name was Maria and she ran a school to teach young girls how to sew. My greatgrandfather Andrea De Camoi was birn at San Martino, Tirano, Lombardia, Italy on 14 October 1848. He had had nine children, the youngest of Whom Antonio migrated to Australia in 1887. Antonio also had nine children including my mother Rosina De Campo. Dear Joe, I love your website. I have been looking for ancestors that were all from Palermo. My mother was married in Livorno July 7, 1946 and left Palermo in November 1946 to go to the USA to live leaving behind 5 younger sisters, her mom and an aunt never to see them again. I am descended from the noble family of Lavizzari of Como who resided in the Lake Como region and many of the towns in the upper Italian countryside around the Valtellina region east of Lake Como in the 15th/16th centuries. My line can be traced to Galeazzo Lavizzari who migrated to the town of Mendrisio in the Swiss canton of Tessin (Tecino) in the first half of the 16th century. Some of his descendents were still in Mendrisio until the 1960's. Other members of the family migrated to Hamburg in the 18th century where the name was corrupted to Lauezzari. My great, great grandfather came to London from Krefeld near Dussledorf in about 1850. I am in touch with the German family as well as other members of the English branch. My half-brother Robin Lauezzari lives in Mountainville, New Jersey. I am interested in contacting any members of the Lavizzari family in Italy or Switzerland who may be related. I have virtually a complete family tree from about 1500 for the Swiss, German and English branches and a copy of the Lavizzari coat-of-arms.

Hi Joe! this is a great site. does anyone have any information about the Benign family. My great grandfather lived in Almalfi. I believe his first name was Carlo. I've heard such wild tales of this man's life I would love to learn more about him. My grandmother's name was Immacculatta Madalena Benigna. Relative Search - Origin: POPOLI (Province of Pescara - both parents are from Popoli - Father's Name: Giuseppe Zaino - born 1897 - (his mother's maiden name was Santilli) - Mother's Name: Maria Dione - born 1899 (her mother's surname was Sabatinella). I am searching for family that imigrated from Sorrento (near Naples) at the turn of the century. My grandfather, Luigi Carlo RUSSO (Louis Charles) arrived at Ellis Island on March 2, 1903 on the Trojan Prince. He was about 13 years old. His brothers Frank (Francesco) of No, 233 Odgen Ave, Jersery City, NJ., Anthony (Antonino died in 1955, I believe in N.J.) and two sisters, Maria who was a nun (soura)-she returned to Italy) and Christina who married in New York (I believe) and had 3 children. I do not know her married name. My grandfather lived with cousins in NY for a while. He married in NJ (I believe) a woman named Charlotte? Wow! I feel like I hit the mother lode! My search is for anyone (probably a cousin) with the name LONGATTI or FRANZOIA. Both are from the northern areas, Longatti from Lombardia, and Franzoia from the Piemonte. I have some info on Longatti, Franchi, Fustella and Bellomo from Piemonte and San Giacomo areas, back to about 1870's. Not able to find any other than first cousins in the Longatti's, although I know sow remained in the Lombardy area, and others emigrated to South America, pre-WWII. I am looking for Ron and Alan DiDonna. They were brothers who attended Antilles High School on Fort Buchanan in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the mid-to-late 1970s. In order to attend the school, their father (or mother) had to have been either a Federal Government employee or US Military personnel (only the dependents of the US Military or Federal Government could attend the school). Hi Joe, Great Page. I am searching for my ggggrandfather Bartholamew BACCIGOLOPPI, possible other spellings (BACCIGALUPPI or BACCIGALUPPO). He was a stow-away on a ship from Italy, making port in Galveston, Texas. Hi Joe: You can see from my name that we have something in common. My grandfather, Bruno Vita (called Joe), was born in Calabria near Cretona or Catona and came to N.Y. in the early 1900's. He married Cristina Crupi and had about seven kids. His son, Anthony, was my father. I believe grandpa had a brother, maned Paul. Joe worked on the docks on N.Y. as was in charge of hiring on one of the piers. We was known for his honesty and fairness. We're probably not related but who knows. I don't know anything about his parents since it was rumored that his father was killed when he was young and his mother gave he, his brother and sister up to relatives to bring up. Hello, I am looking for anyone with the common ancestors of CHIAPPETTA, or CHIAPPETTI, or CAPP. Specifically, I am looking for anyone who may know they have had an older relative by the names of PIETRO CHIAPPETTA, PASQUALE CHIAPPETTA, or a JOSEPH CAPP. Joseph CAPP lived in the Atlantic City area. His name was a shortened version of CHIAPPETTA, shortened around the the 1920s. His relatives all originated from the TRAFFORD, PA, area. I am hunting for info on my husband family COSENZA,Giuseppe and Jennie CARUSO. Both came from Italy in the late 1890's or early 1900's. They meet and married in NY City. To make a long story short, I like all of you am looking for my roots. My Grandfather died in 1985 and with him died most information on my family. I hardly knew him nor did my mother as he and my Grandmother were divorced when my mother was 4. My mother has always wanted to know where our family is from and the family name. Yes like so many others it was changed and being that my Grandfather refused to talk about his father no one even knows his name. I have looked in every page and every link I can find and am stuck. I have sent for the death records on my grandfather but have yet to receive them. The name he went by was March, Bruno Alberto. He was born in Pa. and as far as we know his father worked in the coal mines there. Can anyone give me any ideas for what to do now? Looking for Sicilian family with name, DeBella. My name is Neil DeBella and I saw your entries in the Italian Geneology Guestbook. I am becoming more interested in researching my Sicilian heritage. I am the youn gest of my family of four and my father, Jake is the last living sibling of his family. My father is nearing 90 years old (I'm 45) and everytime I ask to learn more about our family, I get stonewalled or he appears disinterested and have ye t to get much info (mafia connection?). Here is what I know so far: My Grandfather's name was Giovanni (forgive me if I don't spell the Italian word s correctly). My father tells me that he was from Cooleeoone, Sicily (this is ho w my father remembers it pronounced). I do know there is a Corleone, Sicily (yes , of course I have seen The Godfather). My great Uncle Jake and my grandfather came to America on a cattle boat from Sic ily (this is the story at least) and were processed through Ellis Island. The tw o of them lived in New York for a time and worked in the shipyards; one was a ri veter, the other caught and placed the rivets. I can only speculate on when they arrived in America (1890-1897). I don't know what my Uncle's real name was...ev eryone I knew called him Uncle Jake. It seems that my family reuses names quite often (What's the difference between Giovanni and Jake? Plus my father's name is Jake). There were two Lenas, two Emmas and two Annies. Anyway...the two immigrants next settled in New Orleans, worked the shipyards th ere, and then moved to San Francisco to do the same thing. As the story goes, wh en the 1906 earthquake hit, my family (don't know how many there were by now) pa cked everything they had into a cart and walked to San Jose, CA and permanently settled there. My Uncle and Grandfather then started a wholesale produce busines s and sold fruits and vegetables from the farmers in Salinas, Castroville, Fresn o, etc. to the grocers in San Jose. The business eventually became know as Piera cci Bros., and they worked out of a place called "The Market" which was located on Race St. or Market St. or somewhere in the "then" downtown area. It may still be there. Other partners in the business were Henry "Hank" Pierraci and Henry P asquinelli. My grandfather married a woman named Lena (I think) who was from Albania but was described by my father to be Italian (something about the abundance of Italian blood in Albania at the time). My grandparents had six children, Carrie, Martin, Peter, Annie, Emma, and my fat her, Jake, all born in San Jose. My father's birth certificate is a bit question able and I'm not sure how my father got it because it was burned, theoretically, in the '06 earthquake. The birthdate, my sister argues, is up to five years off . My father's true name is Giovanni Gesepi DeBella (Jake, Joseph or Jakie, and s igns his name J. J. DeBella). I always knew that my father was born in 1910, but my sister says that he is older than that. When my son, Mark, asked my father w hen he was born, he told him 1909. I suspect I will never know...age is very per sonal with my father even though all siblings lived into their 90's except for A untie Carrie, the first born. She died of lung cancer (non-smoker). Every Aunt a nd Uncle have died in their given birth order, my father being the last survivor . My grandfather owned 5 houses before he died and they were/are all located on Li ncoln Av. in San Jose where some DeBellas still reside (Luke, a cousin). My Uncl e Pete was at least 95 when he died just a few years ago in San Jose. I lived in San Jose for 30 years and then moved to Portland, OR. I have a cousin living up here, Mark Pizzo, who graduated in my high school class. We do not kn ow each other nor see each other. I suspect that the DeBella name was once Bella (beautiful). The de or di are giv en names or titles. One time I was on the Queen Mary in L.A. and stopped in to a Coat of Arms shop and tried looking up our coat of arms and they found Bella an d the de was a title of sorts. Enough for now. I hope this helps. I am copying Chuck Starpoli because he is als o looking for Bellas. Both grandparents and Autie Carrie died before I was born in 1953 so much is los t in family knowledge and culture.

Hi Joe, I have searching the web to see where to start to research my Italian ancestors.It's a shame we don't have better records. My mother was born here but her parents, uncle and brother came from Italy. My uncle was born in 1898 in Italy and was supposed to have come here anywhere between 1903 and 1912. My grandfather Samuel DeVince and his brother Tony came here earlier. When my uncle was either 5 or 12, he came with my grandmother Philomeno Pecora DeVince. i don't even know if I am spelling their name right.Some say DiVince, or DiVinci. all I know is that it was change somewhere and they now use the name Vinch. If anyone has the surname Vinch, I would be interested in the derivation of your name. I can remember someone saying they may have came from Palermo. Thanks for the website.
